Army Cares

Loans for soldiers

Important:   Expect an 8 week 'wait' time between the date of application and receiving payment (if the application is approved).

The ARTF provides two types of loans to eligible applicants - General Loans and Relief Loans. Eligible applicants are members of the Australian Regular Army or the Army Reserve who have completed 12 months continuous full-time service.

General Loans: These are made available for any reasonable purpose and attract a Fund Maintenance Contribution of 2% of the loan value. This fee is much lower than comparable commercial loans. Loan amounts can be between $300 to $6,000, and members can choose varying repayment terms up to a maximum of two years.

Relief Loans: These are intended to assist applicants in solving financial problems without having to borrow money at high interest rates elsewhere, or depend on consumer credit. Relief loans are generally provided to those experiencing financial hardship. Priority is given to cases where the situation has arisen due to unforeseen circumstances or situations beyond the control of the member. There is no Fund Maintenance Contribution applied to Relief Loans.

Applicants can calculate repayment rates for both loans using the ARTF loans calculator.

Before applying for a loan, Members are advised to read the general conditions governing loans.

The ARTF Trustees will in some exceptional circumstances approve a Hardship Grant to individuals assessed as being in financial hardship. Click here for further details.

From 1 July, 2008 all Army RTF applications MUST be provided electronically.  Faxed applications will not be accepted, unless approved by The Secretary.
